Introducing Antoni Rajwer, CEO and founder of Knack

If you’re looking for an old-school engineer, you’re in the wrong place. Antoni Rajwer’s racked up over three decades of experience but he’s always learning new tricks. He’s instinctively creative and a problem-solver, and he’s honed his skills as an engineer and a leader in a wide range of design, manufacturing and safety-driven firms over the years. Put all this together and you’ve got someone who can rapidly remove obstacles and add value to your business.

All too often engineers know engineering but they aren’t used to thinking about broader business dynamics. And while there are plenty who can knock out straightforward projects for you, they don’t have the experience to apply technical engineering expertise to unusual or challenging situations. That’s where Antoni comes in.

Antoni’s worked for a wide range of leading companies including Fisher & Paykel, Carter Holt Harvey, Du Pont, and Thermakraft. He was made a supervisor in his very first job, and he’s worked extensively in management as well as in roles like mechanical engineering, product design and manufacturing, safety engineering and management, and production line engineering. It’s unusual to have this combination of leadership and technical skills, but Antoni genuinely enjoys working with people as well as products and processes.

That’s why Antoni went and gained an MBA at Deakin University in Melbourne, graduating as the top student in his class. More recently he’s become a Lead Assessor for Engineering NZ, making him one of a handful of engineers in the country who are qualified to assess whether other engineers are competent to go forward for professional registration.

Antoni combines these qualifications and his experience with a focus on results. “I always start with getting an understanding of what the customer wants,” he says. “Often people have great ideas but they’re gilded with things that aren’t practical. I have to get into their headspace and help them figure out how to get to their goal in the real world.” That also means thinking more broadly than just engineering and considering factors like costs, materials, manufacturing processes and location, and supply chains.

Antoni’s been using SolidWorks for these projects since 2006, and he likes the way it lets you test ideas and iterate fast. Using the most advanced version of SolidWorks, Antoni can perform stress analysis, design and rendering—very few people can do all three—and he can assess the full range of safety certification requirements. This gives him the ability to meet a wide range of client needs, and Antoni enjoys the rapid and flexible approach that SolidWorks offers. “SolidWorks is parametric dimensioning,” he explains. “You create a body with dimensions and as you change the dimensions the body changes, so you can design on the run without having to wait until you’ve got final numbers to plug in.” Unlike other CAD applications, “you can start with numbers you think will work then adapt it as you go, and you can produce different combinations and permutations. A SolidWorks render lets you assign qualities to parts of a product and come up with a realistic picture so you can see how it looks as well as how it works.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with designing plant and machinery and products around the world,” says Antoni. “I’ve seen it all—the good, the bad, and the ugly.” This is one reason he’s confident to tackle particularly challenging or unusual jobs. He’s helped make sure that giant Christmas trees don’t fall down on happy crowds, that advertisers’ creative stunts don’t become famous for the wrong reasons, and that opera-goers don’t have to worry that the Phantom of the Opera’s chandelier will plummet on top of them.

Perhaps that’s why his clients keep coming back. “Return services and retaining customers is how I measure success,” Antoni says. “A business that has loyal customers must be doing something right.” Whether you call it new-school engineering, or engineering reimagined, or just common sense plus creativity, why not get in touch and see how Antoni could help you?
