You wouldn’t want to fall off a wind turbine. It’s a long way up, and the technicians who work on them don’t want to take any chances with their safety. But not all turbines are the same, so when technicians needed a verified custom safety solution for a Vestas wind farm, they called Antoni Rajwer.
Because this wasn’t a standard job, Antoni went out to the site to inspect where the harness points would be installed and then he went to the supplier to get the original product information. That was prepared to the European standards and in-house testing, so Antoni’s next task was to extrapolate that information to New Zealand and work out if this solution would comply with local requirements. That meant drawing on his extensive stock of experience across a wide range of industries and reviewing manufacturers’ testing regimes to make a valid and acceptable comparison.
Only after he had thoroughly reviewed documentation and inspected the installed solution was Antoni satisfied that it would do the job it was supposed to. “You want to make sure no-one will be put at risk,” says Antoni. “It comes down to trying to save lives.”
When you’re faced with something a bit out-of-the-box, like having to use a product designed to different standards, pragmatism, experience, and a total commitment to safety come in handy.
